About the project
“Convergent” is a book series that goes beyond the borders of a conventional creation, relying on a new way of telling a story. Each novel of the series can stand alone but they also connect like pieces of puzzle forming a whole which tells a greater story. This project has the possibility of changing the face of Romanian literature, proposing a new kind of storytelling that uses different means of expression.
Oana and Maria Heller are working together on the “Convergent” project. The novels of this series move forward in an intertewinning pattern between the two writers: a novel written by Oana Heller being followed by one written by Maria Heller and so forth. Apart from the book series, “Convergent” includes in the same plotline a number of stories which take the shape of short graphic novels.
Amongst the most innovative characteristics of these novels is the fact that the stories offer variable outcomes: while reading the novel, at some point you encounter a path that leads to a split – from there on, the action splits in two possibilities. This split is marked by an illustration and after it the novel continues with one of the possibilities while the second one is, most of the times, developed in the form of a graphic novel. The illustrations, the graphic novels and all the artwork regarding this project are created exclusively by Oana and Maria Heller.
Each novel in this series is written from different perspectives, offering a wide palette of characters which complete the story with their own subjective impressions of the world they live in. The novels have a realistic nature, bringing to the table contemporary themes and subjects that have been too little debated in the Romanian literary world. Multiple points of view is one of the key aspects of the series – the characters have their own subjective and sometimes contradicting testimonials which offer transparency to the story and build a well rounded world. The diversity of the narrating characters and the depth with which every character is treated with gives the whole story a complexity that define this series.
Since the first novel of the series, „La început a fost minciuna”, (en. First there was the lie) was already published, this project has already begun. The first graphic novel will also be launched soon. With the help of this crowd-funding campaign we wish to continue our project, and we hope that through your assistance we will be able to finance the printing of the second novel of this series, called “Fata in palme”. The 7.000 RON will be used for the printing of 200 copies of the novel and for putting together the illustrations and all the promotional items that will be given as rewards.
“Fata in palme” is a psychological novel whose main theme is abuse and which focuses on the feeling of incompatibility felt by the characters. Each character seems to be dislocated from the world of the novel and forced to live in a reality which is parallel to everyone else’s. The main character is struggling with the psychological wounds of the abuse he has been marked with, trying to deny its influences. The novel’s theme brings a very complex and difficult problem to light, a problem which is usually misunderstood by society: an uncomfortable subject, which, when faced with nobody wants to take the responsibility of representing.
Both the victim and the perpetrator are narrating characters in the novel, and through their eyes the reader can see the story beyond the prejudices which surround these kinds of people in the day to day life. The abuse depicted in “Fata in palme” is a corrosive and traumatic one which extends its roots deep into the victim’s mind, poisoning their perception of the surrounding world and of their self-image. The abusive relationship illustrated in this novel extends over a number of years, passing the stages of denial and anger, acceptance and renunciation, showing just how complex and multi-faced such a relationship can be.
We feel that this subject of abuse should be brought to light in order to raise awareness of the things which, ignored and silenced as they are, still happen around us on a daily basis. Due to the public's ignorance, these problems remain unsolved and untreated, the aggressors remain unpunished and the victims are the ones who suffer the most from the prejudices and the myths formed around this topic. Therefore, literary innovations aside, our project, and mainly this novel, has an informing role on the behalf of a subject which is too little debated and in a great need of attention.
We need your support in order to continue our project. Be by our side and help us change the way stories are told in Romanian contemporary literature for the better!

*If this project will be funded the novel will be printed in January 2015 and the rewards will be delivered in maximum 60 days from the end of the campaign. The novel will not be printed unless the project is financed.
